WMAES’ Environmental Themes Program

Here at the West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, we believe that education should go beyond the core curriculum and delve deeper into the issues of today, the environment. We do this by taking every month of the school year to focus on a unique theme regarding the environment. For the month of September that theme was ecosystems and living things.

In honor of our environmental theme, we incorporated discussion and action in to our lessons, ensuring every student can take away meaningful lessons while also enjoying time outdoors. Environmental education is about breaking the indoor habit and being completely unplugged.

For example, Ms. Beuving’s Environmental Science class spent the day Thursday up in Traverse City with the Inland Seas Discovery Center. They completed team missions with water-based remote operated vehicles (ROVs) and spent the afternoon on a schooner doing scientific experiments about the aquatic life and health of Suttons Bay!
