Meet Cameron Smith, MAPSA’s MiCharter Hero and Special Education Teacher at WMAES

February is upon us at West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, and we are off to a great start for finishing this year strong in our classrooms! With that comes recognition of our Special Education Teacher Cameron Smith from the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA) as their Michigan Charter Hero of February!

He started teaching at WMAES in 2011, saying that he, “Didn’t know what to expect at first, but I truly fell in love with the school right from the start.” Cameron served as the Special Education Teacher for his high-school students for 4 years, spending countless lunch periods talking with them, and building a relationship of trust with them more and more.

When a particular student of his presented his Capstone Project, an annual project for seniors at WMAES, it was noted that much of their social and academic success went back to Cameron’s tireless efforts with his students. His work both inside and outside of the classroom holds as a testament to the impact teachers have when passion and genuine care meet in the pursuit of student empowerment. We are beyond proud of Cameron for this recognition and are so glad to have him teach at our school. For more information read the following release from MAPSA, and be sure to follow us on social media.
