STEAM School Challenge

On Friday, October 27, 68 students from West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science, Muskegon Montessori Academy for Environmental Change (our sister school) and Creative Technologies Academy participated in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Challenge. This is the first of three events planned throughout the year which will focus on how we can use technology to assist with monitoring natural systems. Students used technology to monitor the water quality in the Rogue River in Rockford, Michigan, as it relates to salmon habitat quality. The event called on students to collaborate, get creative and practice measuring and recording data using a variety of technology. By the end of the school year, the groups will return to the Rogue River to test the final devices as they release salmon raised as part of the Salmon in the Classroom program put on by the Michigan DNR.

“West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science is beyond excited to host a three-part Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math challenge,” said Secondary Principal Alan Bosker. “The opportunity to collaborate and apply technology applications to nature is such a unique opportunity. This hands-on experience will have a direct positive influence on our environment while using the creative problem-solving skills of our secondary students.”
